Backyard Elegy

This view. I love this view. It’s comforting, tranquil, and lovely. This is where I come to feel safe, secure, and hopeful in the face of obstacles and uncertainty. Still. This is home, but this is not just my home. This strip of land bolsters four houses, all of them belongin… Continue

Independence

A lot of people place all their emphasis on the Christmas holiday.
My favorites are Thanksgiving and 4th of July.
I always go home to see my parents and siblings.
Good visits. Good memories. Good pics. And most of all good food.
We sit on a barge in the middle of the lake when it gets dark and watch the fireworks.
Ooooooo! Ahhhhhhh! we croon in unison.
My skin feels sticky from sunscreen, sweat, and bug spray. I don't care.
It's worth it.
Happy Fourth of July!
See you Monday.

“TMI!” I shouted after my 24 year old daughter shared her experience of getting a Brazilian wax with her 19 year old sister and me. What was she thinking? I clamped my knees together. Bikini wax I can understand. You want to look neat and tidy when you put on a revealing swimsuit. I could only imagine what position you take to have this procedure performed on your “down under” areas. Is it as ridiculous as the stirrups in a gynecologist’s office? Do I really want to know? I think my imagination… Continue
